Commentary: "Akwa Ibom Children and Witchcraft" by: Sam Udom Forgive me for the late foray into the debacle concerning Akwa Ibom Children and Witchcraft. Frankly this is my first encounter with this particular website. Having read the aricle by one of the signatories, one can't help but be struck by the unfortunate situation in which those children have been placed. Equally frustrating for me as an observer, is the seemly timid and inefffective approach the government and citizens of Akwa Ibom have applied to tackling the matter. Ignorance has always been the main culprit in most matters where culture invaribly clashes with the norms of a "civilized" society. To which I ask, "What steps have been implemented by the state government to educate parents who might fall prey to the camapaign?" It's obvious that this has been an issue that has beset the Akwa Ibom and other states. What specific programmes have been put in place to educate families to safeguard children? It took Mary Slessor (a Scottish nurse) to point out the evil in discarding and killing twins. The shame for me and for all Nigerians, is that after almost 100 yrs, the battle fought to save Nigerian children by that noble woman is still being fought. Only 550 signatories? Come on people. We can do better. To have your commentary posted here, please send an email to . Include your subject, full name and location. NO attachments please.
